DEAR SIRS,
I have the pleasure in stating
that, acting upon instructions from this Vestry, I recently tested Hayward's
Pavement Lights as to their construction. The Vestry being advised by the
Local Government Board that those recently fixed at the underground
convenience in Charing Cross Road should be strengthened.
A duplicate Light, measuring
5 ft. 9 1/8 in. × 3 ft. 10¼ in. over all, and
glazed with 4 × 4 in. Lenses, was experimented upon, and loaded with
a distributed weight of pig iron equal to 699 lbs. per superficial foot.
This remained on the Light for three days without any sign of fracture,
when an additional load was applied, equal to 1132 lbs. per superficial
foot, which was left on for another three days, and as far as I could see
there was no sign of fracture. When the weight was removed, the frame
was uninjured, and only nineteen of the Lenses were splintered.
I consider this test eminently
satisfactory, and have had no hesitation in advising the Vestry that the
fears of the Local Government Board are groundless. Needless to say we
have not thought it necessary to put additional supports to the Lights
in question.
