Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,185, dated December 2, 1873; application filed October 22, 1873.
CASE 29.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THADDEUS HYATT, of New York, in the county of New York and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flexible Sheet-Metal Illuminating-Plates; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which--
Figure 1 is a plan view of the upper side of a section of an illuminating-plate of my improved construction, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The design of my invention is to produce an illuminating-plate for roofing and other like purposes, which shall be flexible and capable of being conformed to any desired curve; to which end it consists in a roofing composed of flexible sheet-metal plates, and provided with glazed light-openings, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawings, A represents a plate of sheet metal having such thickness as will insure the necessary rigidity, and at the same time will permit it to be bent to any desired curve or angle, and provided with a number of light-openings, a, which latter have
any desired size or position. A button-head lens, B, is placed within each opening a, and secured in place by means of a nut, C, which is screwed upon the lower threaded end of said lens. A rubber gasket, D, placed beneath the head of each lens, renders the joint between the same and the plate A water-tight.
The plate thus constructed furnishes a perfect protection against snow or rain, is durable, and can be easily and quickly bent to any curve or angle which may be necessary, or in order to adapt it to position.
The cost of an illuminating-roof constructed in this manner is materially less than those ordinarily used, while the protection afforded is equally great.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new, is--
A roofing composed of flexible sheet-metal plates, and provided with glazed light-openings, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of July, 1873.
THADDEUS HYATT.
