Lewis Hine (1874-1940)
was an American sociologist and photographer, best known for his images
of child labor. His pictures were instrumental in reforming child labor
laws in the United States.
The Library of Congress has a
Prints & Photographs division,
whose Online Catalog provides access
to about 95% of the more than 14 million items they hold.
Its National Child Labor Committee collection
has about 5,100 photographic prints and 355 glass negatives:
"Photographs, taken primarily by Lewis Hine for
the National Child Labor Committee, focusing on children, showing
workers, working and living conditions, and educational settings
in the United States between 1908 and 1924. Images depict working
conditions in agriculture, home labor, street trades, and various
other industries, including, mining, canneries, glass factories, and
cotton mills. Photographs also show recreational activities, victims of
work-related accidents, health care activities, and images representing
protests of child labor practices. Included are photographs of cartoons
and clippings."
Provided here are the 156 images from LOT 7478: "Glass factories. Child labor at glass and bottle factories in the United States":
"Photographs show work activities and portraits in glass and
bottling factories in Ohio, Indiana, West Virginia, Missouri, Illinois,
Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Alexandria, Virginia. Work sites in
the latter two locations include an integrated work force of white
and black workers. Images document working conditions and work hours,
showing workers at their lunch breaks and working at night. Also includes
three exhibit panels that use the images to portray child labor in glass
factories (Hine nos. 3514, 3745, and 3745-A)."
The original scans are ~50 MB color TIFFs (click on the Hine#); I converted
them to ~7 MB grayscale JPEGs (click on the thumbnail). No other image
processing was performed.
If an image was available as both glass negative and print, the negative scan
was used. These images have
"no known restrictions on publication";
see Rights and Restrictions Information.
